Zondag
Allereerst dank voor alle lieve en bezorgde reacties op mijn blog van gisteren. Die deden me zeer goed.
De luchtmatras blijkt een stuk beter te liggen, dan het gewone bed. Ik word met een stuk minder pijn wakker, gelukkig, want wat voelde ik me gisteren naar! Katja heeft bij Rick geslapen en ook beter, want zij vond de luchtmatras te koud.
Met zijn allen ontbijten we op de kamer en gaan dan de sneeuw op. De kinderen zijn klaar voor meer uitdaging, dan mijn groene beginnerspistes en willen er met zijn drieen op uit. Rick zegt galant, dat hij bij mij zal blijven.
Gelukkig kan hij vanaf mijn routes ook blauwe en zwarte pistes nemen, anders zou ik me bezwaard voelen. Ik ben een complete slak vergeleken bij hem. Nu heeft hij natuurlijk als jong kind in Zwitserland gewoond en is het skien hem als het ware met de paplepel ingegoten. Dat is toch anders, dan het als volwassene leren.
Het is werkelijk schitterend skiweer. Het vriest flink, maar is mooi zonnig en natuurlijk is er gisteren verse sneeuw gevallen. We gaan een paar keer de berg af en dan is het alweer tijd om te lunchen. We hebben met de kinderen bij Cheat Mountain Pizza afgesproken.
Dat blijkt erg populair te zijn en er is een wachttijd van ongeveer drie kwartier. We doen het toch maar, want we hebben allemaal zin in pizza en het is overal erg druk. De pizza blijkt het helemaal waard! Rick, Kai en ik delen een "Hay's Revenge" met allerlei hete pepers erop en smullen ervan! De meisjes doen het wat minder heet, maar vinden hun pizza zo te zien ook erg lekker.
Na de lunch gaan de kinderen er weer gezamenlijk op uit. Eigenlijk hadden we halverwege de middag met ze af willen spreken, maar ze zijn verdwenen, voor we de kans hebben dat te doen. De berg is zo groot, dat de kans, dat we elkaar tegen zullen komen, gering is. Helaas dus geen foto's met de kinderen in de sneeuw en zonneschijn.
Die zon zorgt ervoor, dat het wachten bij de liften onderaan de berg me weer opwarmt. De rijen zijn ook een stuk korter, het lijkt wel of veel mensen al naar huis zijn. Zo houd ik het skien wel even vol! Als we om half vijf de laatste lift naar boven nemen, hebben Rick en ik acht keer naar beneden geskied. Rick heeft alle gevorderde pistes aan deze kant van de berg ook kunnen doen. In tegenstelling tot gisteren vond ik het heerlijk en nu weet ik weer, waarom ik toch skien heb geleerd.
De kinderen zijn al op de kamer en Katja en Saskia willen graag gaan tuben. Kai heeft geen zin en ik vind het te koud, want inmiddels is er een nare wind opgestoken. Rick offert zich op mee te gaan en brengt dan ook gelijk Saskia's en mijn ski's terug. Intussen ruimen Kai en ik op, want we willen morgen op tijd op weg.
Het Aziatische restaurant in het dorpje is ons zo goed bevallen, dat we er weer gaan eten. We krijgen dezelfde serveerder, die al grapt, dat we er kennelijk niet genoeg van kunnen krijgen. Mijn maaltijd van vrijdagavond vond ik zo lekker, dat ik hetzelfde bestel.
De anderen proberen nieuwe gerechten, Saskia zelfs General Tso's kip, waar ze zich nog niet eerder aan heeft gewaagd. Zoals ik had voorspeld, vindt ze het lekker. Kai is helemaal avontuurlijk geworden. Hij heeft van mij het sausje van wasabi met sojasaus afgekeken en doopt daar zijn al pittige kip in. Dat sausje vind ik lekker voor sushi, alleen moet ik er om de een of andere reden altijd van niezen. Niet handig, als je net een stuk sushi in je mond hebt!
Na een gezellige maaltijd pakken we in en brengt Rick alvast wat spullen naar de auto. Dan is het alweer de laatste nacht van deze korte skivakantie.
Maandag
Om kwart voor drie word ik wakker en zijn verdorie de pijnen in volle kracht terug! Met alle macht probeer ik een positie te vinden, die ietwat pijnloos is, maar dat lukt maar nauwelijks. Dat wordt lekker terugrijden straks, vooral omdat er geen tijd is om te sporten om de spieren los te krijgen.
Na zo'n nacht ben ik opgelucht, als ik op kan staan, dus ik ben blij Rick om half negen te horen. De kinderen zijn ook al gauw op en voor ons doen zijn we snel. Nog geen uur later is de kamer leeg en zijn de auto's ingepakt.
Voor het laatst lopen we naar The Junction om daar met zijn allen te ontbijten. Helaas hebben ze alleen een zeer middelmatig buffet, al smaken de roereieren met tomaat en kaas wel lekker. Dit is ook de laatste maaltijd met Katja weer voorlopig. Het was toch weer erg fijn om met het hele gezin compleet te zijn dit weekend! Ik vind het dan ook zo leuk om te zien, hoe de kinderen onderling van elkaars gezelschap genieten.
Vanwege de mogelijkheid op gladde wegen in de bergen, hebben Rick en ik besloten tot ongeveer halverwege met Katja mee te rijden. Dat is voor ons wel een omweg van zo'n honderd kilometer, maar ik voel me er geruster op.
Na uitgecheckt te hebben, gaan we op weg. We nemen de WV-219 naar het zuiden. Die wordt inderdaad al gauw flink bergachtig en bochtig en arme Saskia voelt zich, ondanks de Dramamine, bepaald niet lekker. De weg is goed schoon, al maakt Rick op een minder schoon stukje een kleine schuiver. Het is dus wel oppassen geblazen.
Katja vermeldde bij Snowshoe, dat ze benzine nodig had. Het benzinestation daar had echter geen benzine meer. Haar meter staat bijna op leeg. We kijken dus met argusogen uit naar een station, wat we pas dertig mijl verderop in Marlinton vinden.
Hoe mensen, die in de bergen wonen, hun boodschappen doen en benzine tanken, is me een raadsel. Ze wonen meer dan 45 kilometer van de dichtstbijzijnde voorzieningen! En waarmee verdienen ze hun geld, als ze al werk hebben? Geen wonder, dat West-Virginia een van de armste staten is. Er is gewoon echt helemaal niets in de bergen!
Voor ons als toeristen is het wel leuk om door dit prachtige, besneeuwde landschap te rijden. De ruige bergen worden afgewisseld met valleien met boerderijen met de typische rode schuren, die mooi tegen de sneeuw afsteken. Ik heb iets met schuren hier. Er staan zoveel "mooie" oude houten van in de velden, sommigen helemaal vervallen.
Opvallend zijn ook de vele kuddes herten, die langs de weg staan te grazen. Er zijn bijna nog meer herten, dan koeien en paarden bij de boerderijen. Zo af en toe komen we door een gehuchtje, waar op zijn hoogst een benzinestation met winkeltje staat, maar meestal is het slechts een groepje huizen.
Halverwege zie ik opeens een bord "Birthplace of Pearl S. Buck" staan in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Op de middelbare school heb ik haar boek "The Good Earth" gelezen (of liever, doorgeworsteld, want ik was niet zo dol op literatuurboeken). Ik had er geen idee van, dat zij uit West-Virginia kwam. Natuurlijk stond ik er toen ook niet echt bij stilstond, waar de auteurs vandaan kwamen, maar het is wel leuk dit nu te weten.
Hillsboro is trouwens een leuk oud plaatsje, maar je moet wel een enorme fan van de Nobelprijswinnares zijn, om er speciaal voor haar geboortehuis heen te komen. Nog zo'n twintig mijl slingerweg rest ons en dan komen we bij de kruising met de interstate 64 aan.
Bij een benzinestation nemen we afscheid van Katja, die nog ongeveer anderhalf uur te rijden heeft. Wij draaien de interstate op en rijden richting interstate 81. Als snel zien we het grote "Welcome to Virginia" bord met het rode cardinaaltje en de witte dogwoodbloem. We zijn weer "thuis", al hebben we nog zo'n 350 kilometer te gaan.
I-64
Bij een Wendy's halen we bij de drive thru lunch. Ik kies een kleine chili en die is waarempel erg lekker! In ieder geval een stuk beter, dan het spul, dat ik bij Snowshoe at en met $1,39 geen geld, natuurlijk.
En dan is het karren, karren en nog eens karren, tot we eindelijk om half vijf onze afslag van de I-66 weerzien. Hoera! Katja heeft inmiddels ook gebeld, dat ze weer veilig thuis is gekomen.
Rick en de kinderen dragen de tassen, ski's en snowboard naar binnen en dan ga ik gauw naar de kennel. Heerlijk, dat we vroeg genoeg thuis zijn om Cosmo op te halen. Die is dolblij mij weer te zien. Op zijn "rapport" staat, behalve, dat hij gezond is, "We love Cosmo (hartje)". De jongen en meisje, die hem komen brengen, hebben ook duidelijk moeite afscheid van hem te nemen. Zo leuk!
We bestellen kabobs van Friends als avondeten en pakken zoveel mogelijk uit. Morgen een flinke was doen en we zijn weer bij. Het was een erg gezellige reis met Katja er ook bij. Volgend jaar zal Kai ook niet vanzelfsprekend meegaan, dus misschien was dit wel het laatste lange ski weekend met zijn allen.

Maar ik ben dan ook een enorme lezer en verslond de boeken op mijn literatuurlijst.

Wat een verschil maakt het weer en de temperatuur of je het skiën wel of niet leuk vindt. Fijn voor je dat het de tweede dag goed ging.
Toch prachtig zo'n weekendje met het hele gezin. En waarschijnlijk ook weer heel fijn om weer in je eigen bed te liggen...
